Landfill Site

WINTER HOURS

November 1 – April 30
· Wednesdays 3:00 – 6:00 p.m.
· Saturdays 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

The Municipal District of Peace No. 135 would like to remind everyone of the following:
We have noticed an increasing amount of garbage in the road ditches leading to the landfill site. When hauling any household garbage, trash, or other items to the landfill, you are requested to ensure that your load is secured so that debris isn’t blowing or falling off your load.

  • The M.D. pays for 50% of the cost of the recycling bins located in the Village of Berwyn. Your recyclable items such as aluminum and tin cans, glass items, plastics, paper and cardboard can be placed in the recycling bins. You are encouraged to do your part in reducing landfill waste.
  • You are requested to have your items sorted so that everything isn’t just being dumped into the pit. There are several designated areas for such items as wood, metals, wire, tires, electronics, etc.
  • Residents are encouraged to try composting such things as grass clippings and leaves or even explore the option of leaving the mulched grass clippings on your lawn for their nutritional value.

    DROP and SWAP PROGRAM
The DROP and SWAP Program is now operational at the Griffin Creek landfill. Gently used items such as furniture, appliances, tools and reusable construction materials can be dropped off and/or picked up at no charge.  Items such as mattresses, clothing, cribs, strollers, car seats and cloth furniture will not be accepted.  The landfill operator can provide you with a list of the types of items that can be accepted by the program.
The following is a basic list of a few things the M.D. Drop and Swap Program will accept:
Arts & Crafts Supplies: Baskets, Artificial Flowers, Burlap, Storage Bins, Vases
Media: Cables (computer, phone and TV only), CDs and DVDs, Video Games,
Office & School Supplies:  No Logos and not damaged

Various Other Items: Candles & candle holders, Lamps and lamp shades, Picture frames, Plant pots, Seasonal decorations,  Vases, Hardware, tools, Bicycles, Exercise Equipment – in working order, Kitchen utensils, dishes, etc
These items are in addition to the typical items such as furniture, home décor, working appliances, gently used children’s toys, tools and reusable constructions materials such as doors, windows, lighting, etc.

The M.D. of Peace maintains its own landfill site, available to all M.D. of Peace residents.  It is located 7 1/2 miles south and 1 mile west of the Hamlet of Brownvale on SW18-81-25W5.

Alberta Environment requires that the landfill be manned whenever open; therefore the landfill is only open two days a week in order to keep costs to a minimum.
