November 2023 Council Meeting Highlights

Meeting with the Honorable Dan Williams

At the November 14, 2023 Council Meeting, Council met with Dan Williams, MLA and Minister of Mental Health and Addiction to discuss local and provincial issues. Topics included investments, healthcare, the release of inmates and mental health and addictions. The Honorable Dan Williams shared information on a new act the Alberta government is developing called the Compassionate Intervention Act as a means to help address mental health, addiction and public safety issues.

Letter of Support for Northwest Regional Bail Crown Prosecutor

Council directed administration to write a letter of support for the Peace Regional RCMP Community Advisory Committee regarding the pilot project for a Northwest Regional Bail Crown Prosecutor to be located in Peace River to better address the safety concerns caused by the current tele-bail process.

Lueken Gravel Pit

Council approved that Roy Northern be contracted to prepare the studies and paperwork to update the status of the Lueken Gravel Pit located at NW 4-82-26-W5 to active. Progress is underway and the MD expects to be able to utilize the Lueken Gravel Pit in 2024.

Regional Meeting with Neighbouring Municipalities
MD of Peace Councillors and the CAO will attend a regional meeting in mid-January 2024 with Councillors and CAO representatives from the County of Northern Lights, Northern Sunrise County and the Town of Peace River. 

Meeting with Peace River School Division Board of Trustees
Council members reviewed a request from Peace River School Division (PRSD) to attend their annual meeting with the PRSD board of trustees and local municipalities. Council members and the CAO will be in attendance at the meeting on February 7, 2024.

 

Growing the North Conference Councillor Attendance
Councillors who are able to attend, and the Assistant CAO will attend the Growing the North Conference in Grande Prairie from February 20-22, 2024.

 

Public Hearings and Bylaws
Bylaw No. 16/2023 – Council passed the second and third reading of Bylaw No. 16/2023, redistricting land legally known as Part of SE-33-83-23-W5, from Agricultural District to Country Residential. No concerns were brought forward.

Bylaw No. 18/2023 – Council passed first reading of Bylaw No. 18/2023, redistricting land legally known as Part of SE-13-83-24W5, from Agricultural District to Country Residential.

Council Sponsors Free Swim at The Fairview Aquatic Center
Council approved a request from the Fairview Aquatic Center requesting the MD of Peace to sponsor a free swim again in 2024. The cost to sponsor the free swim is $400.

MD of Peace Office Christmas Hours

The MD office will be closed from December 25-27, 2023 and will reopen at 8:30 am on December 28, 2023. The MD office will also be closed on January 1, 2024, reopening at 8:30 am on January 2, 2024.
