Council Meeting Highlights – May 14, 2024

Request to Lease Property
Council approved a resident request to lease MD-owned land at the Cessna subdivision for grain farming purposes. Council directed administration to negotiate the best price for the land rental for the remainder of the year, and for future leases to be in accordance with MD policy.

Wilderness Park Caretaker Taxes
The MD provides the Grimshaw Agriculture Society with reduced taxes for a park model caretaker home located on the property at Wilderness Park. However, the taxes have increased significantly over the last few years with no increase to the caretaker amount. Council approved an inflationary increase of $250, making the total payable $1250. Council also directed administration to invite the Grimshaw Agriculture Society to attend a council meeting to provide an update on the park. 

Council MD Road Tour
Council discussed their upcoming tour around the MD which includes councillors, the CAO, the MD’s Public Works Foreman, and the MD’s Water Operator. Council discussed some areas of interest such as Cessna Road, MD of Peace parks, the Hamlet of Brownvale, the Berwyn Cemetery and gravel crushing work. The tour fosters increased understanding, and a deeper awareness of public works and water-related operations, infrastructure, projects, successes and challenges within the MD.

Harvest Moon Festival Sponsorship
Council approved providing a $2000 sponsorship to support the Harvest Moon Festival that takes place on September 14, 2024 in Grimshaw.

Strong Creek Park Water Source
Council directed the administration to explore the costs of installing a fire suppression T to the existing water shack pipeline serving the park and campground at Strong Creek Park. Installing the fire suppression T will provide a designated point for firefighters to access water quickly and efficiently during emergencies.

Letter of Support for Peace Regional SPCA
Council moved to provide a letter of support for the SPCA to assist in their application for a grant to build a new shelter building. 

Berwyn Cemetery Donation
Council received a donation of $1557.39 from the Berwyn Women’s Institute for the Berwyn Cemetery and directed administration to place it in an account for future use to maintain the cemetery.

Dust Control on Cessna Road
Council denied a land owner’s request to provide additional dust control on Cessna Road, as dust control is the responsibility of each individual property owner, as per MD policy.

Strategic Planning
The council directed administration to seek a facilitator to assist the MD in developing a strategic plan and provide Council with proposed strategic planning dates for the fall of 2024.

Alberta Municipal Affairs Fire Services Review
Alberta Municipal Affairs is hosting a fire services review to collect insights on the delivery of fire services programs and the commissioner’s role. Council directed administration to register Councilors and staff for a virtual session on May 23, 2024, at 1 p.m.

Subdivision Application
Council approved a subdivision application request for NW 36-83-24 W5 with conditions.
