2024 SHELTERBELT PROGRAM
Shelterbelt trees reduce wind erosion, water erosion, help to conserve energy in houses as well as provide food shelter for the birds. To promote the establishment of shelterbelts and facilitate the MD of Peace ratepayers, the Agricultural Service Board will bulk order trees on a cost recovery basis. The order form is available in our office and here: Shelterbelt Seedling Order Form. Trees can be ordered only in bundles of 10 or 15. Trees will be delivered to MD residents on arrival at end of May or early June.
Details of tree species and cost are available are below. Species marked with * have limited quantities, therefore, when the limited quantities are spoken for, a waiting list will be created but there will be no guarantees.
Seedlings will be available by the end of May/ early June. Please note that MD of Peace may/can substitute species due to potential issues with availability and no refund will be issued. The minimum order is one (1) bundle (10 or 15 seedlings), and orders are per bundle i.e. 4 bundles of White Spruce and 3 Siberian Larch (for a total of 60 White Spruce and 30 Siberian Larch).

NOTICE TO MD OF PEACE PRODUCERS AND LANDOWNERS
As per MD of Peace’s Clubroot of Canola Policy, random testing for clubroot was conducted on canola fields within the MD. One sample tested positive for DNA of the clubroot pathogen with no galls present on the root sample. Immediate adjacent landowners and producers are being notified. Environmental Stewardship and Climate Change (ES&CC) Producer Program Funding List – Categories A to E
Grant funding cost share of 30%-50% of eligible expenses to complete the project
The Environmental Stewardship and Climate Change Producer Program supports active producers and commercial manure applicators with assessing their environmental risks and implementing beneficial management practices (BMP’s) that reduce the risk of agricultural contaminants entering water or soil resources, benefit their business, enhance public trust and reduce the impacts of climate change.
The 2018-2023 program-funding maximum is $100,000 over the program term, except in the following limited circumstances:
1. You may be eligible for an additional $100,000 under Category D: Innovative Solutions;
2. For Category B projects you may be eligible for an additional $100,000, over the program term, for each operation owned by an applicant with a unique/different premise ID.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the merit based review process, cost shares levels will vary based on the Minister’s discretion. Cost shares will range from 30% to 50%. The minimum cost share you may receive towards your approved project will be 30% if your project is approved. Your application may be reviewed either on a merit first-come first-serve basis, or by a technical review panel, if additional technical expertise is required. The minimum payment an Applicant may receive under the program is $500.

Rural Acreage Owner Herbicide Weed Control Program
The MD of Peace No. 135 Agricultural Service Board Rural Acreage Owner Weed Control Program was developed to assist acreage owners with the challenging task of performing weed control on a maximum area of two (2) acres/year. Herbicide applications will be conducted as time permits, with the knowledge that priority is always given to the municipal road right of way program. The herbicide application cost will be $200/hour.

Spraying Road Ditches – No Spraying Agreement – MD of Peace
In preparation for the upcoming growing season our ASB is preparing its Agricultural Programs. One of these is the No Spray Program. The No Spray Agreement form must be completed and sent to the Manager of Agricultural Services no later than the end of May each year.
The MD annually sprays municipal road ditches for broadleaf weeds. If you do not wish to have the road ditches adjacent to your property sprayed, you must notify the Municipality by the end of May, and complete a No Spraying Agreement in order to be included in this program. Property owners are responsible for controlling the noxious and prohibited noxious weeds and brush on the adjacent roadside right of way to the satisfaction of the Manager of Ag Services.
The MD will supply “DO NOT SPRAY” signs to participants of this program and the participants will be responsible for installation at the ends of the area not to be sprayed.
Agreements must be submitted EACH year.

THE FALL FENCE LINE SPRAY PROGRAM
Is underway to control Noxious Weeds along private fence lines. The MD will also continue with the existing program to control noxious weeds in the ditches adjacent to MD roads. Weed control work performed on fence lines adjacent to Municipal roads will be done on a first come first served basis at no charge. Adjacent landowners must sign a release to have ClearView+Overdrive, and Navius sprayed along their fence lines for the control of Canada Thistle, Yellow Toadflax, Sow Thistle or Scentless Chamomile (Mayweed).
TO REGISTER for the 2022 Fall Fence Line Spray Program, you must sign a Release form by Aug. 31, 2022.

V.S.I. Services Program
In the mid 1960’s the economics of veterinary practice in northern Alberta did not encourage veterinarians to establish there; in response to this problem, the Alberta Government agreed to establish veterinary clinics in selected areas. The Veterinary Association worked with local governments to establish a system of payment to veterinarians who performed services on farm animals. V.S.I. Services is a non-profit organization that was formed to help assure farmers that veterinary service would be available to them.
The M.D. of Peace pays an annual fee, out of which V.S.I. Services pays the veterinary clinics for 50% of the farmer’s bill for approved services (on cattle, hogs, sheep, goats, bison, elk). Each member Municipality holds a membership in the non-profit organization, as do the participating veterinarians.
The M.D. of Peace provides V.S.I. cards, upon request, to the following:
- anyone who is a resident of the M.D. of Peace for 6 months
- landowner in the M.D. of Peace
- a lessee of a crown grazing lease in the M.D. of Peace
When requesting a V.S.I. card, you must be prepared to give the Municipal staff your Social Insurance Number, as anyone who receives more than $100/year in V.S.I. credit will receive an AGR-1 form from the Municipality which must be claimed on the income tax return.
V.S.I. Program Cap
MD Council has approved the Ag. Service Board recommendation to put a spending cap in place for services provided under the V.S.I. Program. The maximum amount allowable per producer will be $1,800 per year. Any amount incurred over that will be billed back to the producer.

In preparation for the 2020 growing season our ASB is organizing all summer Agricultural Programs. One of these is the No Spray Program. This program is being updated to ensure effectiveness. The No Spray Agreement forms must be completed and sent to the Manager of Agricultural Services no later than May 29, 2020.
Note that to be included in this program property owners are responsible for controlling the noxious and prohibited noxious weeds and brush on the adjacent roadside right of way. Weeds and brush must be controlled to the satisfaction of the Manager of Ag Services.

General Awareness for M.D. of Peace Residents
You might be aware that the MD of Peace began a full-ditch mowing program in 2015 for better weed control, for maintaining the local roads properly and for safer road travel. Brushing, landscaping and rock picking are part of the mowing process. Rock picking from the M.D. road ditches will be completed in 4-5 years. We have observed that some of our producers are pushing rocks into ditches from fencelines or from other places, especially where we have already picked rocks. This practice results in damage to MD equipment and will lead to higher maintenance expenditures. MD residents are advised that if they have already piled rocks along fencelines and need help removing them, to contact the Agricultural Fieldman or Public Works Foreman and they would be happy to work out a proper solution to dispose of those rocks. Please DO NOT push rocks into ditches. MD residents are encouraged to report to the MD office anyone seen dumping rocks into ditches. Expenses incurred to remove the rocks and/or equipment repair may be charged to respective MD landowners. Thanks for your cooperation.

Alberta Agriculture & Forestry On-Farm Energy Management Program On-Farm Solar Photovoltaics
This program shares the cost of investments that improve energy efficiency on Alberta farms. This enables producers to conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions, ultimately reducing the environmental footprint of Alberta’s agriculture industry. The Growing Forward 2 On-Farm Energy Management Program addresses three important industry priorities.
- Increased industry competitiveness. When producers make investments that improve energy usage on their farms, the result is a more competitive, adaptable, and sustainable provincial agriculture industry.
- Improved environmental stewardship. When producers use energy more efficiently, they are recognized as reliable stewards of Alberta’s resources.
- Improved energy management. Producers who install on-farm submeters are better aware of their energy usage and how to manage it to improve their bottom line. What kinds of projects are eligible? Eligible projects include (but are not limited to): – Construction projects that install high-efficiency equipment from the program’s Funding List – Retrofit projects that improve the operation’s energy usage per unit of production – Installation of submeters to monitor on-farm electricity and/or natural gas usage – More sector-specific examples can be found at www.growingforward.alberta.ca
How are costs shared? For most items the program covers 35% of eligible costs, to a maximum of $50,000. Some items are funded on a square-footage or formula basis. The program also covers 100% of the cost for each applicant’s first three submeters. Not eligible are residences and buildings used primarily for non-farm activities.
Who can participate? Producers in Alberta with a minimum of $10,000 farm commodity or livestock production income.

Water Pumping Program
For a nominal fee, producers can rent six or eight inch aluminum pipe and pumps to fill dugouts or other suitable catch basins from nearby water sources. When surface water supplies run low, AARD’s (Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development) Water Pumping Program can assist in replenishing these supplies. Water Pumping Program staff will deliver the equipment to the site and offer technical assistance, safety advice and tips to ensure proper operation. Each producer wishing to use the equipment must sign a contract prior to use. Multi-producer pumping projects can be accommodated with sufficient lead time. Any Alberta agriculture producer that is experiencing a water shortage for domestic, livestock or agricultural purposes is eligible to use the equipment.
